Sun Direct was started in 2007. It exists as a merger between Astro Group of Malaysia and Maran’s Sun Network. The memorandum of agreement was signed in 1997 but the government of India had not permitted the usage of KU Band transponders according to the DTH policy, the project was put on a hold till 2007 when the government announced a change in the DTH policy. The official launch occurred in 2008 following the availability of INSAT 4B transponders. Astro had 20% of the Sun Direct company ownership.
To encourage many new subscribers, the company gave the subscribers a set-top box, a satellite dish and a monthly subscription of about INR 75. However, as the number of customers increased, the basic plan increased to approximately INR 159 which is the current price.
