Paytm History

Vijay S. Sharma founded Paytm in August 2010 by an initial investment of $2 million. Initially, Paytm was a DTH recharge platform and also for prepaid mobile recharge. By 2013, the payments had expanded to include landline and postpaid bill payments. Over time, Paytm expanded to include railway, Uber, and bus payments thus increasing the clientele base.

Other outstanding milestones that have catapulted Paytm are the automated tax payments and Paytm Payment Bank. In 2015, Paytm received a license to operate payment bank and in 2017, the payment bank was inaugurated. As a separate entity, the founder of Paytm only owns 51% of the shares.In 2017, Paytm became first payment app to be downloaded by over 1 million people.
