About MTNL
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, or commonly known as MTNL, is a telecommunications company, providing telephonic and broadband services in Mumbai and Delhi. It also provides services in the Mauritius island of Africa as well. The company enjoyed monopoly till 1992, in the cities of Delhi and Mumbai, after which the telecom sector was opened to various other companies. The Government of India still holds 57 percent stock of the company, and other public and institutional sectors own the rest. The shares of the company are also listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange, American Stock Exchange, and the New York Stock Exchange. As of 2017, the company has 3.58 million subscribers. The total number of employees working at the company is 45,000, as of 2010.

Bombay Telephone was founded in the year 1882. The first telephone exchange in Mumbai started in the month of January 1882. The first telephone system was established in Delhi, in the year 1911. It was only in 1986, when the Government of India established MTNL, in order to control the telephone operations in both the cities of Delhi and Mumbai.
