It is also known as the Post Office in India, and the largest Post Office in the world. When the British Raj ruled India, in 1861, there were about 889 post offices. Approximately 43 million letters and 4.5 million newspapers were handled on a yearly basis. The General Postal Union was founded in 1876. The Post Office Savings Bank was established in 1882, in Calcutta or Howrah. The Life Insurance Plans started in 1884. The Indian Post Office started its postal service in 1898. The first airmail flight happened in the year 1911. As of 2011, a floating Post Office was inaugurated in the Dal Lake, Srinagar, Kashmir.
