Hotstar was launched in the year 2015. It was primarily launched as a way to help users watch the 2015 Cricket World Cup at the comfort of their mobile devices. Within six days of its launch, the app garnered about 1 million downloads. As of the year 2018, the service provides about more than one lac hours of video content in various different languages. In the year 2017, the company had owned the rights to air IPL or Indian Premier League matches, up to the year 2022. In the same year, the company also expanded its services into the countries of Canada and USA.
