Gionee was founded in the year 2002. The founder of the company was Liu Lirong. Liu Lirong is also the chairman of the company as well. In the year 2016, the company opened its first manufacturing plant in India. The company introduced its first Made in India phone, known as the Gionee F103. The phone was manufactured at a Foxconn manufacturing plant. In the year 2014, the company was spiralled into a controversy in Germany, that Gionee phones had inbuilt malware. The company also started selling smartphones in Miami, Florida, with the help of another brand BLU, who rebadged Gionee smartphones under their name. In the year 2018, Gionee India was acquired by Karbonn mobiles.
